Tanzania and Rwanda agreed, on Sunday 14 January 2017, to build a railway line of 400 kilometers from Kigali to the port of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).
The announcement was made by Tanzanian President John Magufuli at a press conference following his talks with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in the Tanzanian capital.
According to President Magufuli, the construction of the railway line in question would be financed jointly by the two countries.
The Foreign Ministers will meet next week to begin looking into the modality of funding so that the construction of the railway line can start immediately, as feasibility studies and other preparations are completed.
“President Kagame and I agree to look for loans to speed up the construction of the railway line,” said President Magufuli.
The Tanzanian President recalled that his country had fully supported the candidacy of President Kagame for the presidency of the African Union.
