The Ivorian state plans to open 30 rice factories by June 2018 throughout the country to bring more local production.
The revelation was made Monday, January 29 in Abidjan, by the director general of the National Office for Rice Development (ONDR) Yacouba Dembélé.
According to the DG, who was speaking on the sidelines of an Africa Rice Center-initiated workshop, 30’s 25 000 plants each are currently under construction and will be operational by June 2018.
To believe Yacouba Dembélé, the development of the rice sector in Côte d’Ivoire is hampered by the transformation and financial support.
Moreover, Mr Dembélé said the country has gone from a production of about 500 000 tons in 2011, to about 1 400 000 tons which stagnates since 3 years.
It should be noted that in early January, the Ivorian government created a Rice Industry Development Agency (ADERIZ) to revive its rice policy to replace the ONDR.
