A pioneer in mobile commerce, Kenya crossed for the first time the symbolic threshold of 1000 billion shillings of quarterly transactions.
The announcement was made Thursday by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) who said in a statement that “308.6 million transactions, valued at 1170 billion shillings ($ 11.7 billion) were recorded for the second quarter of fiscal year 2017-2018 (October 2017-December 2017), an increase of 64% over the previous period (714 billion shillings). The Kenyan regulator notes however that the number of transactions is him, down from one quarter to the other (308 million against 352 million previously).
This latest quarterly activity report confirms in all cases the “concentrated” nature of the Kenyan mobile market, with most of the transactions being carried out via the country’s two main mobile financial services: M-Pesa (18 million subscribers ) of the operator Safaricom and Equitel (2 million members) of the banking group Equity, which continues to deploy a large number of agents (30,000 against 50,000 for M-Pesa) and develop payment solutions compatible with the others operators in order to catch up with its main competitor. Other active platforms are Airtel Money, Lipa Sasa and MyDuka.
As for the total number of subscribers and agents registered throughout the country, they were at December 31, 2017, respectively 30 million and 198234.
