President Patrice Talon announced on Saturday, September 22, his decision to cancel the tax imposed on communication services following a meeting with industry players.
According to a statement read to the public channel, “by appreciating the presentation on the state of mind of the populations and after having listened to the GSM Operators and the ARCEP, the Government notes that the modalities of implementation of the said decree by the operators, from 19 September 2018, are likely to sever the overall economy of the sector, to the detriment of consumers, especially the most modest. Due to this imbalance of the economy of the sector which harms the interests of the consumers, the President of the Republic, after having heard the Council of Ministers, he decided to repeal the decree aimed to count from monday 24 september 2018 at 00 o’clock.
The text emphasizes, moreover, that the government reaffirms its vision to make the sector of the digital economy, a vector of development and growth of the Beninese economy and announces to the Net surfers that to count from Monday 24 September 2018 at 00h , the new rates announced by the Operators are repealed and the old ones remain in force until further notice.
Recall that the decree just removed the Head of State imposed a levy of 5% on all services related to calls, sms and the Internet.
