French President Emmanuel Macron’s congratulations to his Guinean counterpart Alpha Condé do not match the classic “for your brilliant re-election” which the elected heads of this world send to each other in such circumstances. On the contrary, the Elysee Palace in a letter dated November 30, 2020, sends “wishes for success” to the Guinean president following the “confirmation of re-election by the constitutional council”.
And the French president to say that he measures the expectations of the Guinean people, evoking the economic recovery and national reconciliation, “after the violence, the divisions and the questions which have punctuated these elections”. And Macron to call on his counterpart to respond to these challenges in a “spirit of dialogue, consensus and respect for the rule of law”.
President Macron’s statement comes ten days after harsh criticism of Alpha Condé, who he accused of changing the constitution to run for re-election. These belated and reserved congratulations in any case remove France from an untenable contradictory position between the Ivorian Alassane Ouattara, warmly congratulated and his Guinean counterpart reelected, it is true, in a climate of disputes and accusations of massive fraud by the opposition.
