The Military Council for the Transition (CMT), the self-proclaimed governing body in Chad following the death of President Idriss Deby Itno, has appointed Albert Pahimi Padacké, 54, as prime minister. The latter is already responsible for forming a government whose action will be supervised by the future National Transitional Council (CNT) which acts as Parliament.
A man of the seraglio, Albert Pahimi Padacké spent his career in various ministerial portfolios in previous governments before being appointed head of government from February 2016 until this post was abolished by the Constitution of May 4, 2018. Originally from Gouin in Mayo-Kebbi West on the border with Cameroon, he notably held the post of Minister of Finance but also of Energy and Oil as well as Agriculture. His entry into a government was generally determined and coupled with his participation in a presidential election and the political anointing of Idriss Deby Itno for this participation.
From this proximity or even from this collusion with the N’Djaména regime was born an image of “foil”. A man of moderate consensus in his criticism of the regime, Albert Pahimi Padacké notably presented himself as a candidate for the last four presidential elections at the head of his own formation the National Rally for Democracy in Chad – Le Réveil (RNDT – Le Réveil), but always taking care to distance itself from the strategy of boycotting the opposition because of the unpreparedness and partiality of the consultation.
He was appointed Minister of Telecommunications after collecting only 7.8% of the 2006 presidential vote. He was appointed to Agriculture after obtaining 6% in that of 2011 where he came second behind the incumbent president. He came third in 2016 with 7.8% of the vote before being appointed to justice. In the election last April, he came second with more than 10%. Personality of the brutal non-rupture with the regime which came to power in 1990, Albert Pahimi Padacké was, moreover, with Moussa Faki Mahamat, current president of the Commission of the African Union (AU), one of the first personalities to meet, on April 21, at the Palais Rose, seat of the Chadian presidency, a few hours after the death of Idriss Deby, with Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the new strongman of the country and son of the late Head of State .
