In Mali, the military junta is celebrating its first anniversary this Wednesday, August 18, 2021. For this, Colonel Assimi Goita addressed the Nation through a short speech Tuesday evening. “A message of remembrance and hope,” according to the Malian head of state.
“A year ago,” to the day, the “people took their destiny in hand,” said Colonel Assimi Goita, leader of the Malian coup leaders. The August 18, 2020 coup, he said, was intended to turn the page of a story and start “writing a new chapter.”
“Making this wish, I have a pious thought for those who have been torn from our affection (…), from Kayes to Kidal via Bamako, most often in the prime of life. I also bow to those others who heroically fall to the front, accepting the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the Fatherland. May they rest in peace ! We cannot forget them, ”he said.
According to the Malian head of state, “the people have responded overwhelmingly to the call.” Likewise, he declared to his compatriots, “the National Army, your Army, could not remain in the wait: it therefore took its responsibilities to intervene and allow the realization of the popular wish, change “.
In his speech, Assimi Goita believes that “what happened on August 18 is an outcome”. For him, a “state collapse on March 22, 2012 should have been followed by a patriotic leap.” “Instead, it was management, one of the major consequences of which was the failure of governance,” he suggested.
According to the Malian president, although it is a culmination, August 18 is a new beginning. “A gigantic construction site calls out to us,” he says. Before adding that “the rupture that occurred on August 18 was immediately followed by a series of measures in the direction of this overhaul”.
