The current events in Sudan do not leave the international community indifferent. Shortly after the arrests on Monday morning, the US, the European Union and the Arab League expressed concern over the attempted military coup.
“We are following with great concern the events unfolding in Sudan. The European Union calls on all stakeholders and regional partners to get the transition process back on track, ”said Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in a post on Twitter.
Shortly before this statement, the United States, through the American envoy for the Horn of Africa, Jeffrey Feltman, expressed “deep concern” at the announcements of arrests of civilian leaders in Sudan by military forces. Adding that these events are “against the constitutional declaration and democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people”.
For his part, the secretary general of the League of Arab States, the Egyptian Ahmed Aboul Gheit, in a statement, did not hide his “deep concern”, before calling “all parties to respect” the agreement. power-sharing plan established in 2019 after the fall of Omar al-Bashir.
So far, no reaction from the African Union can be reported.
Towards a military coup?
As a reminder, the Sudanese prime minister and several civilian leaders were arrested early Monday, October 25, by armed men. Abdallah Hamdok, placed under house arrest, was transferred from his home to an unknown location after refusing to support the ongoing military coup.
The state broadcaster’s headquarters in Omdurman was also stormed, the source said, and the Internet cut. Other sources also report the closure of Khartoum airport and the suspension of international flights.
Note that the army is deployed in the streets of Khartoum, while demonstrators try to gather and the opposition calls for civil disobedience. These events take place after weeks of tension between civil and military authorities, and less than a month from the planned transfer of power to civilians.
