The son and political heir of the former Libyan leader the late Muammar Gaddafi officially applied for the presidential election on Sunday November 14th scheduled for December 24th. The false suspense that could still be observed has just been lifted. the
Muammar Gaddafi’s son had already announced his presidential intentions. The “sword of Islam”, that’s the meaning of his first name, is officially back on the Libyan political scene as Financial revealed in February 2021.
Aged 49, Saif al-Islam, second son of Muammar Gaddafi, has long harbored ambitions to succeed his father. He was long presented as the potential successor of the King of the Kings of Africa for whom he played the international emissaries. According to one of his close associates, Saif’s top priority is “restoring the lost unity” of Libya. Making the indisputable observation of a country today “destroyed, in shreds without money and without security, left to the mercy of arms dealers and mercenaries”, Saif’s relative sees his foal as the only man capable of reconcile the different factions in conflict.
Behind this candidacy, the Gaddafi movement wants to seize the opportunity to officially mark its return to the political arena and take part in the ongoing negotiations.
Saïf’s supporters ensure that they support the resolutions of the last meeting held on Libya in Paris.
All in all, the political battle is on and despite the condemnations hanging over Saif, it would seem that he is not prevented and the Libyan High Electoral Commission should in principle validate his candidacy.
