Kenya’s President William Ruto has nominated some of former head of state’s men in his recent cabinet reshuffle.
Dr Ruto has nominated Mutahi Kagwe as the new minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Development, replacing Andrew Karanja, who has been proposed as Kenya’s Ambassador to Brazil.
Mr Kagwe served under former president Uhuru Kenyatta and then deputy President William Ruto since 2020 as the cabinet secretary for health until the end of his term.
Other nominations include former Nakuru Governor Mr Lee Kinyanjui proposed to lead the Ministry of Trade, while former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo was nominated to head the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Digital Economy.
Former Sports minister Ababu Namwamba has been appointed as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON).
Mr Namwamba worked as the Sports Cabinet Secretary under President Ruto before Gen Z’s anti- government demonstrations put pressure on the head of state to fire his Cabinet.
Trusted insider and ally to the president, Kipchumba Murkomen who is serving as the CS for sports, culture and heritage has been promoted to the powerful position of minster for Interior and National security.
This was after the position was left vacate by current deputy president Kithure Kindiki after the ouster of Rigathi Gachagua almost two months ago.
Mr Salim Mvurya has been moved from Trade to sports, youth affairs and creative economy.
The nominations have been submitted to the National Assembly for consideration and approval as per constitutional requirements.
Former agriculture CS Dr. Andrew Karanja and his ICT counterpart have been fired from the cabinet.
