The President of the Republic, Jose Mario Vaz Tuesday named 30 January August Antonio Artur Silva as new Prime Minister by presidential decree.
The head of state said in the decree that the appointment of Mr. Silva will end the political crisis that has raged in the country for more than two years.
According to the document, the appointment of Mr. Silva results from a hearing made to political parties.
Augusto Antonio Artur Silva is a senior leader of the African Independence Party of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
- Silva has held several ministerial positions, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Minister of Fisheries and the Minister of National Education.
As a reminder, the former prime minister of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoko Embalo, presented the 12 January in the evening evening his resignation to President Vaz because of “the absence of conditions to continue to perform his duties”.
The political crisis in Guinea-Bissau is due to the sacking, in 2015, by the president Vaz of the government of the PAIGC resulting from the elections held a year earlier. Since then, no government formed at the initiative of the President has been recognized by four of the five parties represented in Parliament.
