The African Development Bank ranks fourth among the best companies to work for on the continent, according to the 2018 survey Employers of choice for Africa.
Of the top 100 companies, the top four are held by the World Bank Group, Chevron, Exxon Mobil and the African Development Bank.
More than 20,000 African professionals responded to the survey questions on employee motivation and working conditions. The opportunity to learn new skills, the quality of health care delivery, the leadership dimension and the prospects for change are key indicators for the best employers.
“The importance of having a positive impact is felt very strongly in the answers to the questionnaire,” said Alex Mugan, General Manager of Global Career Company and co-author of the study with the British firm Willis Towers Watson. “This, coupled with the ongoing organizational transformation at the African Development Bank, explains the Bank’s (and employer’s) continued high esteem with many African professionals around the world. ”
Trust in senior management – especially in leaders who know how to listen – employers who lead by example ethically and those who respect corporate values also appear to be the three most important factors in choosing an employer based in Canada. Africa.

Attract the elite of African executives
“This ranking reinforces the efforts of the Board of Directors of the Bank and its management to accelerate the necessary institutional change and efforts to attract the best and brightest, in order to implement the Bank’s High 5 program that “Enlighten Africa and Fuel it, Feed Africa, Industrialize Africa, Integrate Africa and Improve the Quality of Life of People in Africa,” said Bank President Akinwumi Adesina.
The Bank has an excellent track record of attracting top talent from across Africa and remains in the top 5 of the top rated multilateral organizations and institutions.
This study highlights a shift in talent management, marked by increased interest from jobseekers in financing investments, while employers are looking for experienced experts in digital.
Overall, the survey reveals that job security is considered one of the main reasons for staying in an organization. In addition to the factors that attract men, such as skills development, the report indicates that women in their professional careers are more interested in such criteria as health coverage, flexible working conditions, work-life balance and privacy, or ethics.
More than just a ranking, this report aims to reflect on what makes an employer of choice in Africa and, in doing so, positively change the employee experience in Africa.
The list of 100 selected companies includes banks, oil companies, consumer goods brands and mobile operators.
